HKAPI 57th Anniversary Annual Dinner: “A Sustainable Ecosystem for Medical Innovation"
The Hong Kong Association of Pharmaceutical Industry (HKAPI) hosted its 57th Annual Anniversary Dinner on June 20, 2025, with the theme “A Sustainable Ecosystem for Medical Innovation.” Approximately 300 guests, including key stakeholders from the healthcare sector, gathered to celebrate the achievements of the industry and beyond.
The evening began with welcoming remarks from HKAPI President, Ms. Shan Wu. She emphasised the shared vision of positioning Hong Kong as a global hub for medical innovation. This vision relies on a collaborative ecosystem where academia, research and development, healthcare professionals, service providers, patient groups, the pharmaceutical industry, and other stakeholders in the healthcare system work together seamlessly to drive innovation with a focus on ‘people-centred care.’
Following Ms. Wu’s remarks, distinguished guests Prof. Chak-sing Lau, Dean of the Li Ka Shing Faculty of Medicine at the University of Hong Kong, and Prof. Wai-Yan Chiu, Dean of the Faculty of Medicine at the Chinese University of Hong Kong, joined her for an engaging panel discussion, facilitated by HKAPI Vice President Mr. Lawrence Wong.
The discussion began with reflections on the recent Bio 2025 conference in Boston. Prof. Philip Chiu shared insights into Boston’s vibrant innovation ecosystem, highlighting the significance of entrepreneurship and the proximity of major pharmaceutical companies and research laboratories
Prof. C.S. Lau emphasized the importance of effective communication between researchers and potential investors, stressing that collaboration is crucial for advancing biotech initiatives in Hong Kong. He called for fostering a culture of research and entrepreneurship among students and clinicians.
Ms. Shan Wu underscored the pharmaceutical industry’s pivotal role in driving innovation and providing healthcare solutions. She advocated for close collaboration between industry leaders, academia, and clinicians to translate research into practical applications.
Looking to the future, Prof. Lau emphasized the necessity of global equity in patient access to innovative medicines. Prof. Chiu echoed this sentiment, highlighting the importance of patient access.
