Organized by the HKAPI R&D Ecosystem Taskforce and supported by Baker McKenzie, the first seminar of the “Precision Medicine Seminar Series” was attended by around 50 members at Baker McKenzie’s new office in Quarry Bay. Prof. John Kao (Chair Professor of Translational Medical Engineering, The University of Hong Kong; Head of BioMedical Technology Cluster, Hong Kong Science Park) started off the session with a lecture on the basics of precision medicine – its definition and how it differs from traditional medicine in terms of treatment; its current status on research and translation; a few practical examples of precision diagnostics; an analysis of its development in Hong Kong; as well as what role the Science Park plays in it.
The session continued with Prof. Leung Tak-yeung (Chairman & Professor, Department of Obstetrics and Gynaecology, The Chinese University of Hong Kong) explaining the application of precision medicine in obstetrics, and the opportunities and hurdles of genetics and genomics tests in this area.
The seminar ended with an interactive panel discussion, where many asked about the application of gene therapy, the Hong Kong Genome Project, and the role of the pharmaceutical industry in the Project.
